Mid State Bank

Micro Structures
Mid State Bank Z Scale Kit # 202

The Mid State Bank consists of a photo-etched bank building in the 6.5x4.375-inch sheet.  There is also a sheet of clear plastic for window glazing.

I've begun painting with enamel paints prior to assembly in the image above

The front of the bank has its name and date of establishment engraved in the "stone." After putting on the enamel paint I smeared some water-based black pigment from the Woodland Scenics Earth Color Kit. Then I wiped with a paper towel to remove the excess from the stone. This makes the text a little more readable, although I may have filled in the engraving a bit too much when I put on the original enamel paint.

For some strange reason, a goof on the part of Micro Structures perhaps, all of the windows except four were made to put into the building after being painted. The other four had to be painted very carefully as part of the wall. Micro Structures provided a template to protect the rest of the wall and suggested that the windows be airbrushed. I just tried to be very careful and paint the window frames with a small brush.

The kit went together fairly easily. However, I misread the illustration for folding the edges of the roof - the "crown" was folded towards the roof on the back and away from the roof on the front. I folded everything towards the roof. As a result, some of the pieces did not fit together properly and I cut off some "extra" brass with  nippers. I did get the roof and "crown lip" installed, but with a few gaps. I filled the gaps with Foam Putty

and painted over it. So the bank isn't quite as planned, but it looks all right.

After completing the assembly, I touched up a few spots where the paint had been scratched during construction. Overall, I think painting with enamel paint before I begin construction has worked out pretty well.
