Acrylic vs. Enamel Paints Acrylic paints seem to be available in a lot more colors than enamel paints. However, enamel paints seem to adhere better to metal and brass. I used acrylic paint on several of my brass kits and on the plastic Birthday Locomotive. The paint seemed to scratch or rub off easily when I handled the brass kits during assembly. When I removed the Birthday Locomotive from its box, the finger-pressure on the locomotive's metal railings loosened them so that they came off, paint and all. So I'm beginning to feel that, even with the more limited colors available, enamel may be better than acrylic, at least on metal and plastic. I also discovered at the Hobby Town USA store in Little Rock that there is actually a lot better selection of enamel paints available, from Testors and other manufacturers, than found in the little packages of six colors that you may have seen in some hobby shops. You can buy on-line from Testors (including Aztek, Floquil, Pactra and Model Masters brands) if you don't have local access to the larger variety of paints. |
