Buildings and Other Structures About the beginning of November, 2008, I decided to begin assembling buildings so that I can get a rough idea of where things will go before doing any other landscaping. I already had The Queen Anne house, unused from my Winter layout, and thought it would make a good brothel for my frontier town. I purchased and downloaded PDF files of Old West Kit #1 from Paperbeam for printing out cut and fold paper models. I had also purchased an 1880s Dry Good Store, which I've renamed "Arkwright's Provisions and Mining Supplies," (RSLaserKits) from Z Scale Monster Trains for this layout. Micro-Trains Line has released some accessories other than just locomotives, train cars, and track. Late last year I purchased a livestock pen from Norm's Train World and I think it will look nice setting out in the desert along the train track. I didn't realize that some of the other RSLaserKits buildings were also from their 1880s series of buildings until I went to their web site. Since they had a few items not available at Z Scale Monster Trains, I purchased them all from RSLaserKits: a hotel, Dakra Dry Goods store (which has become the Sheriff's Office), a saloon, a blacksmith shop, and some farm wagons. With these laser-cut wood kits I don't think that I'll need the Paperbeam models. As of Christmas 2008 the layout is as shown in the last image here. The Grover Cleveland Mine is above and the six buildings of the town are below. I don't know that this is the final arrangement for the town, but it should allow me to continue with the landscaping . |
